Maria Lassnig, painter. She is an artist from Austria who works mostly with herself. She uses her art to understand her place in this world. Her visual language has changed throughout the years but she has repeatedly worked with specific themes; such as body awareness, death, family, the role of women in society and communication between the human and animal world. This painting stood out for me when I was looking through her work. It’s so raw and direct, I had to take a few minutes to let it sink in. I like the visual language, the white background enhances the body and makes it stand out. Almost like it has been cut out and stuck on a white piece of paper. It immediately draws all your attention to the woman. I am intrigued by the action in the moment, she wants to shoot herself but she also wants to shoot us, her audience. The question mark the viewer is left with is fascinating.
Marieke Wessels, artist.
They worked together and found a way to make sounds by touching plants. This reminds me to stay open to everything. I think it’s beautiful that they found a way to combine modern technology with nature. Sound is something I have been getting to know more in my own work aswell lately so I have been looking out for artists working with sound, it’s so inspiring what you can do with it.
